St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve

Coastal headland with dramatic cliffs, clear waters and rocky beaches. Parking available on request. Controllable road leading right up to the cliff top; axle restriction of 3m on the road.
Drone filming is completely prohibited from 1 April until 31 July due to nesting seabirds, and from 15 October until 15 January due to grey seal pupping.
The Pineapple

Geilston Garden

200-year-old walled garden and charming country house dating from 1766. House is not open to the public and is predominantly unfurnished and unmodernised, so a great blank canvas with the correct health & safety procedures in place. A generator would be needed as house power is inadequate for filming. The garden is well maintained with a large vegetable patch, period greenhouse, woodland areas, stream and excellent views over the River Clyde. Good parking and transport links to the property.
The Hill House

The Hill House is known as Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s domestic masterpiece and it remains fully intact. Mackintosh designed the building and interiors, and his wife Margaret Macdonald created the furniture and textiles. An ongoing restoration project now means the house is fully contained within a mesh box, with walkways enabling views from different angles and even over the top of the house.
A unique fusion of modern architectural finesse and early 20th-century revolutionary design; open to creative briefs. Ample parking and facilities for crews.
Ben Lomond
Scenic views, forest and thatched cruck-framed building | Rowardennan | G63 0AR
Under an hour from Glasgow, this mountain offers an array of different scenery without requiring the full ascent. A 30–45 min walk affords spectacular views of Loch Lomond and the surrounding hills. The ascent is through birch and oak forests and the area also boasts waterfalls, streams and a replica cruck-framed thatched building, a great period croft double. Parking available.
Culzean Castle & Country Park

Spectacular cliff-top castle designed by Robert Adam in the 18th century with luxurious interiors including an oval staircase, armoury, grand period kitchen and the luxury Eisenhower Hotel with views across to Arran. Tiered formal court gardens surround the castle along with battlement walls, intricate arches and a clock tower.
The vast surrounding estate encompasses eclectic follies such as a pagoda and gothic Camellia House, extensive woodland, walled gardens, Swan Pond, controllable roads, playgrounds, multiple beaches, headland paths, a deer park and sea caves beneath the cliffs.

Brodick Castle, Garden & Country Park

Grand baronial castle dating back to the 14th century but refashioned in the mid-19th century. Interiors are dark wood and heavy Victoriana with many hunting trophies. The castle is situated in a country park and boasts a walled garden, woodland garden, ‘Bavarian summerhouse’ with conifer decoration, waterfalls and bathing pools. Ample parking available.
Goatfell
Scenic mountain peak and valley | Arran | KA27 8JJ
Goat Fell is the highest peak on Arran, offering amazing views back to the mainland and even Ireland on a clear day. Area incorporates 2,400ha of mountain environment and moorland including the stunning Glen Rosa. Scenic boulder-topped mountain but not very accessible for a film crew.
Weaver’s Cottage

Traditional weaver’s cottage with low ceiling beams and period furniture such as a working hand loom; a good example of pre-Industrial Revolution life. Property also features a cottage garden. Parking limited and situated on main road. Only suitable for small productions.
Robert Burns Birthplace Museum
Museum, Cottage, Monument and Garden | Alloway | KA7 4PQ
Frequently visited site celebrating the life and work of Robert Burns. Permissions to film inside the Burns Museum to be sought at least 3 weeks in advance of filming date to give time to clear loans. Museum also offers function rooms that can be used for filming pieces to camera. Burns Cottage is a cosy, three-roomed 18th-century cottage, set in small landscaped gardens.
Ideally filming to be conducted outwith opening hours; only suitable for small productions.
Arduaine Garden
Exotic coastal garden | Oban | PA34 4XQ
8ha coastal garden situated on the southern slope of a promontory beside the Sound of Jura. Features small ponds and watercourses throughout, and plant species from all over the world with ferns, bamboos and many exotic shrubs and trees. The garden is renowned for its rhododendrons and azaleas and is replete with these colourful blossoms in April and May. Ample parking available.
Crarae Garden
Exotic woodland garden | Inveraray | PA32 8YA
20ha woodland garden in a dramatic setting. Garden features Himalayan plants, unusual trees and a bamboo tunnel. It’s centred around a crashing burn, spanned by several bridges and tumbling through a rocky gorge with waterfalls and pools. A great double for an exotic garden setting. Garden is set on a hill and vehicle access is not feasible, so better-suited to lighter crews. Ample parking available.
Branklyn Garden

Attractive hillside garden overlooking Perth and containing unusual plant species from the Far East. Garden features rockery, colourful trees and a café with a terrace overlooking the garden. Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve
Scenic mountains and ridges | Near Killin | FK21 8TY
Expansive nature reserve area with views over Loch Tay. High-level car park allows easier access to the mountains and stunning scenery without too much of a walk. Scenic single-track road takes you from Loch Tay to Bridge of Balgie, past Lochan na Lairige. Boundary map available on request; drone filming considered on application.
Moirlanich Longhouse
Byre house | C19th | Near Killin | FK21 8UA
A tin-roofed, cruck-framed byre dwelling with family living quarters separated from the cattle byre by a wooden partition. Retains original features such as box beds, scotch dresser and layers of patterned wallpaper dating up to the 1950s. Rooms are small, so more suited to factual programmes and small crews. Parking available close to the property.
The Hermitage
Enchanting woodland | Near Dunkeld | PH8 0JR
Originally designed as a pleasure ground in the 18th century. The woodland has a fairytale quality with moss-covered bridges and arches, multiple forest paths and a picturesque folly with viewing platform overlooking the crashing Black Linn Falls. Woodland contains towering Douglas firs, a native species of North America, making this a great double for American landscapes. Vehicle access into the woodland is possible with permissions; ample parking for tech vehicles; access directly off the A9 road. Drone filming considered on application.
Linn of Tummel

Linn of Tummel is where the rivers Garry and Tummel meet, creating a deep, atmospheric pool. This area comprises 19ha of coniferous and deciduous woodland, riverside paths, interesting rock formations and the Garry Bridge, a footbridge built in 1910 that affords excellent views of the river below. Dollar Glen

Stretch of woodland set in the shadow of the Ochil Hills. Features deep gorges, rushing burns, towering trees and Castle Campbell (managed by Historic Environment Scotland). Narrow footpaths and multiple steps to access the glen, so better suited to lighter crews.
Alloa Tower
Medieval keep | Alloa | FK10 1PP
14th-century tower with important medieval features, notably the timber roof structure and stone vaulting in the great hall. The tower was updated in the 18th century to include an Italianate staircase and minstrels’ gallery. Access to the battlements is permitted, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area; access is via a narrow, spiral staircase. Parking available.
The Battle of Bannockburn

Exteriors comprise landscaping, wildflower meadows and restored commemorative monuments, including the iconic statue of Robert the Bruce. The visitor centre offers the Battle of Bannockburn Experience, using 3D technology to animate the battle and story. Parking available. The site is very popular, so interior filming may not always be possible.
The Bachelors’ Club

Rockcliffe
Coastal nature reserve | Near Dalbeattie | DG5 4QQ
Stunning coastline area, stretching along the Solway Firth. 44 ha of nature reserve with shingly beaches, rocky coastline with coastal paths and scenic sea views. Inland areas offer ancient woodland and wildflower meadows. Filming may not be permitted at certain times of the year due to wildlife activity. Parking is available at the Beach car park at Rockcliffe village (short stay (20mins) during the summer. Parking is also available at Baron's Craig Hotel on application to the hotel.

Living museum dedicated to the work of artist E A Hornel. Pink Georgian house exterior with sumptuous Edwardian interiors. The gallery room is a real highlight with mahogany panelling, Parthenon frieze (inspired by the Elgin marbles) and an ornate fireplace. Outside is a mature garden full of Edwardian charm, featuring a pond with stepping stones, wisteria-covered paths and views of Kirkcudbright harbour and the River Dee. On-street parking is available outside the house (although the High Street can be busy); further parking is available around the town and in nearby car parks.
Grey Mare’s Tail
Impressive waterfall | Moffat Water Valley | DG10 9LH (property is 3 miles NE of this postcode)
Spectacular 60m waterfall and surrounding mountain nature reserve, leading up to Loch Skeen ringed by craggy hillsides. The path follows a fast-flowing burn right up to the waterfall with views down into the gorge. The ascending path allows great views of the waterfall with a hillside backdrop.
It’s a steep 10-minute walk up to the waterfall, and a further walk up from there to Loch Skeen, so best suited to crews with light kit. Ample parking available.
Thomas Carlyle’s Birthplace

Small white-painted cottage; great example of Scottish 18th-century vernacular architecture. Birthplace of prolific 19th-century writer. Good example of domestic life in the early Victorian period. House is small, so best suited to factual crews with limited equipment. Limited roadside parking.
Robert Smail’s Printing Works

Operational letterpress printers; an important part of Scotland’s industrial past. Printing presses, some of which date back to the Victorian era, can be seen in action; shelves of type line the walls, revealing changing fashions for typefaces; and 52 giant guardbooks showcase almost every item printed by the family firm. Living history and rich industrial backdrop for filming. Parking available.
Priorwood Garden

Walled garden located in the ancient precinct of Melrose Abbey and backing onto a rustic cottage. Garden has three distinct areas: a dried flower garden (best in summer), leafy heritage orchard (framing abbey views) and a shady woodland area. Brodie Castle

Original 16th-century tower house with Scottish Baronial additions dating between 17th century and 19th century. Interiors mainly 19th-century in style. Highlights include a library lined with wooden bookcases, reception rooms with magnificent plaster ceilings, and stone entrance hall. Castle exterior is rose pink and surrounded by vast grounds, including a large play park and daffodil gardens. Ample parking available.
The castle also offers accommodation or filming in the Laird’s Wing (sleeps 14 people), so perfect for a shoot-and-stay location (subject to availability). Please contact the Filming Manager for enquiries to film in the apartment.
Glencoe National Nature Reserve
Iconic Scottish scenery | Glencoe | PH49 4HX
Popular with tourists and film crews alike. Iconic landscape of towering mountains, awe-inspiring glens, rivers, controllable roads, cottages and waterfalls. Multiple car parks throughout the glen but parking can be limited in high season (June–August) due to high volume of visitors. Drone filming permitted in low-level areas only.
Please contact the Filming Manager for more details on this property as there’s a filming code of practice in place due to several landowners in the area.
Corrieshalloch Gorge National Nature Reserve
Gorge, waterfall and suspension footbridge | Braemore | IV23 2PJ
Spectacular tree-lined gorge with 25m-long Victorian suspension footbridge and viewing platform. The bridge overlooks water crashing 45m over the dramatic Falls of Measach. The footbridge is 300m from the car park via an accessible path. Weight restrictions on the bridge apply. Ample parking available.
Inverewe
Sea-facing botanical garden | Poolewe | IV22 2LG
Garden in the Scottish Highlands created in the late 19th century and featuring exotic plants from all over the world, including California redwood trees. The garden is on the Atlantic coast and features ponds, a walled garden, extensive woodland, a café and gallery space. Inverewe House, with 1930s exteriors and interiors, stands at the centre of the garden. Ample parking available.
Culloden
Iconic battlefield | Near Inverness | IV2 5EU
Large battlefield where the final Jacobite Rising came to a tragic end in 1746. Modern visitor centre has timber walls, a roof-top viewing terrace and roof garden. Battlefield features a Victorian memorial cairn and a restored 18th-century thatched cottage. Parking available, but the site can be very busy in peak visitor periods.
Due to the sensitive nature of the site, we ask for a synopsis before approving filming.
Staffa National Nature Reserve
Hebridean island with dramatic rock formations | Near Mull, Inner Hebrides
Dramatic basalt rock columns rising from the sea make this wee island incredibly photogenic. Rugged and indented coastline, with many rocky outcrops and sea caves. The most impressive is Fingal’s Cave: 75m deep with an arched entrance and known for its natural acoustics. High-level walkway allows access into the cave. This walkway is undergoing intermittent work so please contact Filming Manager in advance of filming to discuss status. Please note drone filming is not permitted on Staffa between 1 April and 31 July, to prevent disturbance to breeding seabirds.
The island is 6 miles west of Mull; local operators are available to charter a private boat. Landing on the island is weather dependent, so please incorporate into any filming plans.
Canna
Remote island | Gaelic archives | Near Rum, Inner Hebrides | PH44 4RS
Small island, which supports a crofting community, features white sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and rocky outcrops. Variety of buildings on the island, including 3 churches that stand out dramatically in the landscape, and Canna House, a square villa built in 1865 with eclectic interiors. The house contains an unparalleled archive of documents and photographs documenting ancient culture, folklore and the Gaelic language.
No mobile signal on the island. Access is very weather dependent, with many crossings cancelled in the winter. Ferry journey takes 3–4 hours from Mallaig.
St Kilda World Heritage Site
St Kilda – Dramatic archipelago with rich cultural and natural history | Outer Hebrides
Very remote archipelago, 41 miles west of North Uist. UK’s only dual UNESCO World Heritage Site. With towering cliffs and sea stacks, the islands form the largest seabird colony in northern Europe. Islands also have evidence of human existence dating back to prehistoric times, with various archaeological remains and structures. A National Trust for Scotland ranger is the only permanent inhabitant for part of the year.
There is a drone exclusion zone around the islands to protect the seabirds, so no drone filming within 1km of landmass.
Please note St Kilda is uninhabited over the winter period. No mobile signal. In the summer, spaces at the campsite are limited and popular, so plan your trip far in advance. Limited weather cover options. Travel to St Kilda is erratic so also leave room in schedules to allow for boat delays.
Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage & Museum
Thatched cottage and museum | C17th | Cromarty | IV11 8XA
Birthplace of inspirational 19th-century geologist, folklorist and fossil hunter. The humble thatched cottage dates from 1698 and adjoins a later Georgian house, which contains a museum dedicated to themes from Hugh Miller’s life. There’s also a small garden and a cobbled courtyard. Both properties are better suited to small, factual crews. On-street parking only.
Glenfinnan Monument
Iconic monument in Highland landscape | C19th | Glenfinnan | PH37 4LT
Towering monument built in 1815 as a tribute to those who died fighting for the Jacobite cause. Set against a scenic backdrop of Loch Shiel and surrounding mountains to the south, and the Glenfinnan viaduct to the north. The monument is 18m high; access to the top (via spiral staircase) is possible. Parking available but in high demand during peak season.

Abertarff House

A 2½-storey townhouse with a projecting turnpike stairway. The oldest house in Inverness and an important example of 16th-century domestic architecture. Compact property; better suited to small crews. Limited on-street parking or in the nearby Rose Street car park.
Torridon

Ancient and enchanting wilderness of water and rock. Majestic mountains and wild landscapes boast numerous hiking trails and photogenic rock formations, leading down to Upper Loch Torridon. Please contact the Filming Manager for a boundary map. Ample parking available.
Balmacara Estate
Highland crofting estate and dramatic landscapes | Near Kyle | IV40 8DN
2,500ha estate comprising rocky, moorland-covered hills interspersed with lochs, woodlands and crofting settlements. Also features a long indented coastline scattered with offshore islands and white sandy beaches. Great examples of Scottish crofting landscapes with small whitewashed houses, stone barns, corrugated tin roofs and wildflower-rich meadows. Estate includes Scotland’s rainforest, a rare habitat of magical and ancient oak and birch woodlands with carpets of mosses and ferns (SSSI status). Ample parking available. One of the highest and most isolated waterfalls in Britain. The waterfall is 113m high and tumbles down a steep narrow cleft in the stone; the thundering water is often shrouded in atmospheric mist. Access to the falls involves a 8 mile hike; location only suited to small, adventurous crews. Car parking available at the Kintail Rangers’ office.
West Affric
Remote scenic landscape | near Kyle | IV40 8HQ
Situated at the western end of the Glen Affric National Scenic Area and includes part of the old drove road from Skye to Dingwall. Vast region of wild and beautiful land with native trees, beautiful lochs and rugged moorland. Bare mountain crags stand out with startling clarity, while the spongy moorland underfoot provides ample walking trails. Very remote area with little-to-no road access; best suited to small, adventurous crews on foot or photography projects.
The most straightforward way to access the area is to walk from the Forestry and Land Scotland car park at the end of the public road in Glen Affric.
Kintail & Morvich
Remote mountain scenery | Near Kyle | IV40 8HQ
Remote area popular with walkers, with a network of trails leading up and around the mountains, lochs, glens and coastline. Features the magnificent Five Sisters ridge and stunning unspoilt scenery. Very remote area with limited road access; better suited to small, adventurous crews on foot or photography projects.
Parking is available at the Ranger Office at Morvich Farm, just off the A87 (the main road to the Isle of Skye).
Iona
Holy island | Near Mull, Inner Hebrides | PA76 6SG
Gateway to Christianity in Scotland when St Columba arrived in AD563. The island still possesses a quiet spirituality, combined with white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and traditional houses. Access via a short ferry crossing from Mull, which can be affected by adverse weather conditions.

This remote 617ha peninsula on the Isle of Mull offers dramatic landscapes with steep and craggy uplands, grassy lowlands and a rocky coastline with wildflower-rich meadows in the spring and summer. Only accessible on foot; better suited to small, adventurous crews.
Parking is available at Tiroran (car park), OS Ref: NM415275. The coastal path starts from here.

Haddo House

Designed in the 18th century but remodelled in the 19th century, this stately home has elegant Georgian exteriors and opulent Victorian interiors. Interior highlights include a wood-panelled hall, chapel, bookcase- and bust-lined quadrant corridor, chandeliers, large entertaining rooms with painted ceilings, and a library with secret door. Exteriors include a terrace garden with geometric flower beds and a fountain. The wider estate contains more modern buildings: Haddo House Hall, a 19th-century wood-panelled theatre (a great build space option), and The Peatyards, built in the 1990s and a great office double or production space. Ample parking available.

Pitmedden Garden

Re-created by the Trust in the 1950s, this garden was based on 17th-century plans of the garden at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. Garden features 6 miles of clipped box hedging, shaped yew hedges and intricate, colourful parterres inside weathered stone walls. There’s a large orchard just outside the walls. 17th-century Pitmedden House adjoins the garden – predominantly for exterior filming although interior filming possible in the North Wing. Ample parking available.
