Trust pays tribute to Stuart Brooks
Stuart joined the Trust in 2017, having previously been Chief Executive of the John Muir Trust and Director of Conservation at the Scottish Wildlife Trust. With decades of experience in the charity sector, mainly focused on nature conservation and the environment, he was well known for his broad knowledge and specialism in peatlands.
Stuart brought this immense knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to all he did at the Trust. He always contributed beyond our organisation, too, as Chair of the IUCN UK Peatland Programme, a member of the Global Peatlands Initiative, and Co-Chair of Scotland’s Landscape Alliance.
At the Trust, Stuart oversaw all our national conservation functions of buildings conservation, nature conservation, footpaths, collections services, gardens and designed landscapes, archaeology, policy, environment and risk. He was instrumental in developing the Trust’s first-ever 10-year strategy, Nature, Beauty & Heritage for Everyone, drawing on his unique strategic insights and operational conservation expertise to support the Trust at a critical point in its history as we sought to recover from the impact of the pandemic.
We are all incredibly grateful to have known him and to have had the chance to learn from him.
Our very deepest condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues and everyone else in the conservation community in Scotland and beyond who had the good fortune to know him.
