One of the grandest tower houses in Scotland, Castle Fraser dates back to as early as 1454 and was home to the Fraser family until 1921. You can discover the fascinating history of the family as you explore the castle on a self-guided tour. Listen out for music and sounds of castle life as you wander round. There are a number of children’s trails available, as well as expert guides on hand to share the history of the rooms.

Originally starting as a defensive tower house, the castle has slowly become an elaborate Z-plan castle compromising six floors, two wings and the round tower. The grandest room in the castle is the magnificent Great Hall. Part of the original tower house, this room has had many alterations over the years. It now features a beautiful Erard grand piano, 17th-century furniture, portraits of the Fraser family ... and the Laird’s Lug!

From the striking simplicity of the medieval Great Hall to the stunning Georgian-style dining room, well-stocked library and Victorian bedrooms, the castle gives a sense of walking through history. Each laird stamped his personality on the family seat, from the various ways of spying on those in the Great Hall to trophies gathered on global adventures.

The panoramic views from the top of the round tower are spectacular, revealing the courtyard, gardens and estate beyond, ready to be explored. The distinctive peaks of Bennachie can be seen in the distance.

After all this exploring, round off your visit by calling into the old Georgian kitchen in the courtyard, now home to our tearoom. We offer a selection of hot and cold drinks, homemade cakes and light lunches, with seating inside or outside in the historic courtyard space. Fresh seasonal menus are inspired by produce from our own walled garden. Featuring specials made from garden ingredients and estate honey, it’s the perfect place to sit and relax in an atmospheric setting.

Opposite the tearoom is the Trust’s gift shop, with a lovely selection of souvenirs, and the Gatehouse second-hand bookshop.
