Kintail is one of the places in Wester Ross offering a variety of events this year.
Wester Ross is one of the most scenic regions in the Scottish Highlands, known for its dramatic mountains, coastal beauty, thriving crofting culture and exceptional wildlife. Alongside world-class walks and outdoor adventures, the area is home to a variety of events throughout the year.

Here’s a round-up of what’s happening across Wester Ross this summer – perfect for planning your next trip.

Balmacara Estate

With Skye on the horizon, explore the rich natural and cultural heritage of Highland crofting and the Atlantic rainforest, amid memorable landscapes and stunning wildlife.

Croft to Coast
This beautiful coastal walk leads through the croftlands of Drumbuie, Duirinish and Port an Eòrna.
Time: 10am–1pm
Difficulty: Moderate (with one short strenuous section)
Distance: 1.5 miles (2.4km)

Coille Mhòr: Scottish Atlantic Rainforest
This breathtaking but challenging walk heads through the Atlantic rainforest habitat of Coille Mhòr.
Time: 10am–1pm
Difficulty: Strenuous
Distance: 3 miles (4.8km)

Biofluorescent night walk 

Wednesday 5 November, Coille Mhòr

Join a guided night walk, led by David Atthowe from Reveal Nature, to explore biofluorescence, where some organisms glow in vibrant colours under UV light. You’ll see glowing fungi, insects and plants in their natural habitat. UV torches and safety glasses are provided. Wear warm clothes, sturdy shoes and long trousers due to uneven terrain and nettles. Don’t miss this unique, awe-inspiring nature experience.

Maximum distance: 2 miles (at a slow pace)
Suitable for: ages 8 and above (children must be accompanied by a responsible adult)

Inverewe

Rare species thrive in this heritage garden where the effects of the Gulf Stream meet the Highlands. Inverewe Garden hosts a range of events throughout the season, including summer exhibitions in the art gallery and local community events.

Corrieshalloch Gorge

Discover this spectacular hidden gem carved into the Highland landscape. Corrieshalloch Gorge hosts a range of events throughout the season, focused on engaging with the local community and visitors.

Walks at Corrieshalloch Gorge

Fern Walk (20 minutes) and Main Path (10 minutes)
Both lead to the Victorian suspension bridge overlooking the 60m-deep gorge and dramatic waterfall, before continuing to the cantilevered viewing platform.

Kintail & West Affric

This area boasts exceptional and remote mountain scenery with lochs, glens, peatland and the magnificent ridge of the Five Sisters. It is home to black grouse, golden eagles and water voles.

Guided walks 

Explore some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes on foot, led by experienced rangers.

Five Sisters of Kintail 
31 May, 21 June, 18 July, 6 September (also can be arranged on demand)

Experience stunning mountain scenery along one of Scotland’s most famous ridges, which is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. Benefit from the Trust ranger’s local knowledge as you look out for wildlife including golden eagle, ptarmigan and red deer. This is a long and strenuous walk over bouldery terrain; it requires good fitness and full hillwalking equipment. 

Difficulty: Strenuous
Distance: 9 miles (15km)
Total ascent: 1,350m (4,400ft)
Price: £60 per person (group discounts available)

  • North Shiel Ridge Munros
  • Glen Affric to Kintail – 2-day guided walk with one night in Glen Affric Youth Hostel
  • Glen Affric Munros – 3-day guided walk with two nights in Glen Affric Youth Hostel
  • Falls of Glomach – a challenging 12-mile round trip hike to one of Scotland’s highest waterfalls, through a dramatic mountain pass.

Sea kayaking

Day trips and taster sessions are available from Kintail, Plockton or south Skye.
Equipment is supplied – ideal for beginners and families.

Combine conservation and adventure in a 1-week holiday!

  • 3 days guided sea kayaking: suitable for complete beginners or those with prior experience. Explore the magnificent coastlines of the Northwest Highlands under the instruction of our fully qualified guides.
  • 3 days practical conservation: learn new skills and help support the National Trust for Scotland in our work at Kintail; jobs may include habitat management, footpath maintenance, fence repair, drystone walling or conservation of archaeological sites such as the Glen Shiel Battlesite.
  • Includes 7 nights bunkhouse accommodation, food for the week and supply of all kayaking equipment
