Description

Wooden rosary made from wood salvaged from Auld Kirk, Alloway, 1822. Comprising a turned wooden cross with brass fittings and a string of 49 spherical wooden beads.

This necklace made of wood with a small cross at the foot was made from wood taken from Kirk Alloway. This ruined church which was built about 1516 features in Burns' celebrated comic poem 'Tam O'Shanter' and is less than half a mile from the Poet's birthplace.

Wooden souvenirs with a direct connection to Burns’s life, made from the wood of trees grown on the banks of the Doon or, in this case, from the rafters of Alloway Auld Kirk, were highly sought after by enthusiastic Victorian collectors and Burns enthusiasts.
