In 2031, we’ll celebrate 100 years of protecting Scotland’s nature, beauty and heritage, and sharing our amazing places with as many people as possible. To mark this special anniversary, we’re creating a Centenary Garden at Newhailes on the outskirts of Edinburgh – a lasting tribute to everything we’ve achieved and everything still to come.
As Scotland’s largest garden owner, we care for a wealth of horticultural landmarks. From the re-created 17th-century kitchen garden at Culross Palace to the Georgian walled garden at Culzean, our gardens and designed landscapes represent almost every style of Scottish garden throughout history and tell stories of tradition and innovation.
Opening in our 100th year, the Centenary Garden will celebrate our horticultural heritage by planting seeds for the future of Scottish gardening. It will be a living celebration of beauty, sustainability and community.
Will you help us connect the past to the future and donate today to support the next 100 years?

The Flower Garden
Our Centenary Garden will be planted in the currently derelict Flower Garden at Newhailes, providing one of the most immersive horticultural experiences in Scotland. There will be something for everyone, from carefully curated planting areas and peaceful places for rest, to outdoor classrooms and events such as harvest festivals – all while spotlighting the history and character of Newhailes.
We’ll promote sustainable gardening practices, such as composting and water conservation. It’s predicted that climate change will continue to cause a rise in Scotland’s temperature across all seasons. We need to create a living, responsive environment that can adapt to our future climate.
We’ll help native biodiversity thrive by nurturing habitats for plants, birds and pollinators.
Why Newhailes?
Newhailes House & Garden is a historically significant 17th-century estate in Musselburgh, just outside Edinburgh. Renowned for its Enlightenment heritage and vibrant natural setting, it is a well-loved destination for families, walkers and gardeners. Within the estate, you’ll find 34 hectares of diverse landscape, from ancient woodlands to parklands. It also features one of the last surviving early 18th-century planned landscapes in Scotland, which will be the site for our Centenary Garden.
With inclusion at its heart, we’ll create an accessible, biodiversity-rich haven that welcomes people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. East Lothian (Newhailes’ surrounding council area) saw the largest rise in population of any local authority in Scotland from 2001–22 and 2,000 new homes are being built next to Newhailes within the next 10 years. It’s vital we provide green space everyone can enjoy.
Our Centenary Garden will deliver positive changes for both nature and people. Will you donate today to bring this important project to life?
