The modern, accessible visitor centre provides a fascinating insight into the last hand-to-hand battle fought on British soil.

At a glance

There is level access from the main entrance to:

Hearing

  • We have hearing induction loops throughout the visitor centre.

Visual

  • The text in our exhibition is available in large print from the Welcome Desk.
  • Audio guides are included with entry to the museum and give information on the exhibition.
  • There is audio-visual interpretation within the exhibition.

Accessibility equipment

  • We provide wheelchairs free of charge. These can be requested at our Welcome Desk inside the visitor centre.

Dogs

  • All dogs are welcome outside but must be kept under close control. Areas of the battlefield have grazing cows, goats and horses as well as nesting birds. From 1 April to 31 August, all dogs must remain on leads and stick to the main paths to protect our endangered skylarks who nest on the ground.
  • Year-round, dogs can be off the lead in our Event Field, which you can find at the back of our café.
  • Assistance dogs are welcome inside the visitor centre and on the battlefield.
  • A water bowl for dogs can be found outside our main entrance and outside the café.

Mobile signal

  • There is limited phone signal at Culloden Battlefield.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available inside our café area.
  • There are staff and volunteers positioned at key points in both buildings who have the use of radios, which can be used to raise the alarm in the event of an emergency.
  • If you are outside on the battlefield (within normal business hours 9am–5pm) and you notice something that does not look right, please call the visitor centre on 01463 796090.
  • As always, in case of an urgent medical emergency or if something happens outside normal business hours, please call the emergency services on 999.
The welcome desk and ticket counter at Culloden Visitor Centre. The floor is made from smooth stone panels. The desk has a low section and is bright blue, in contrast to the stone walls and floor. Parking

  • We have a car park. Car parking is free for members of the National Trust for Scotland. For non-members, there is a Pay & Display charge.
  • There is a drop-off point at the main entrance. The drop-off point does not have a dropped kerb.
  • From the car park to the entrance, there is level access.

Accessible Blue Badge parking

  • We have dedicated accessible yellow parking spaces, less than 50m from the main entrance with level access. These spaces can be found by taking the first right when you arrive to our main car park – head to the side nearest to the main doors of the visitor centre.
  • Parking is free for Blue Badge holders. If all yellow bays are occupied, we will always try to find somewhere suitable for you to park. Unfortunately, we are not able to reserve parking spaces in advance. If you require assistance from a member of staff to find a suitable parking space, please call 01463 796090.

Arrival

  • There is a level and paved path to the main entrance.
  • From the road to the main entrance, there is level access.
  • From the bus stop, there is a gravel path to access the main entrance. However, if you use the paved path from the main car park, please be careful as you move beside the access road to the car park, as it can be busy.

  • The main entrance has level access.
  • The main door is sliding and automatic.
  • The door is 1600mm wide.

Welcome desk

  • The welcome desk has a lowered section to make transactions accessible.
  • We have display information in audio and large print.

Accessible toilets

  • There are accessible toilets on site. There are unisex accessible toilets available.
  • From the main entrance to the public toilet, there is level access.
  • The doors on our accessible toilets are manually opened and open outwards.
  • The doors are 900mm wide.
  • Room size in main toilets: 2380mm x 1700mm
  • Room size in exhibition area toilets: 1630mm x 2000mm

Getting around outside

  • The roof walkway and the battlefield paths are wheelchair accessible and suitable for prams and buggies.
  • Please be aware that the roof walkway is accessed via a ramp.
  • The trail has a hard surface and is sloped – during times of inclement weather, the trails can become muddy and difficult to navigate with a wheelchair.
  • The trail has benches.
  • Please note that Culloden Moor is an exposed landscape where the weather can change quickly.

Leanach Cottage

This historic building stands on the battlefield.

  • The door measures 1610mm high and 580mm wide.
  • The ground both outside and inside is covered in uneven stones.

The modern, family-friendly visitor centre provides a fascinating insight into the last hand-to-hand battle fought on British soil.

  • Tour the battlefield using the wheelchair-accessible paths and roof walkway (also suitable for prams and buggies).
  • The exhibition features an immersion cinema room and a range of audio and visual material to convey the story of Culloden.
  • Travel back in time to the day of the battle by taking part in one of our regular Living History presentations.
  • Connect with the landscape by hearing the story of Culloden on one of our official tours of the battlefield, led by our expert Engagement Team.
  • Visit the iconic Leanach Cottage on the battlefield.

  • Our shop offers a selection of Culloden mementos and beautiful, high-quality, Scottish gifts.
  • From the main entrance to the shop, there is level access.
  • The route through the shop is 800mm wide, or more.
  • From the main entrance to the dining area of the café, there is level access. To get to a table, there are no steps.
  • The dining area is self-service. The route through the dining area is 800mm wide, or more.
  • There is no background music.
