Things to do

School visits

We welcome school visits at Newhailes. For more information, please see our Learning pages.

Play areas

Weehailes, our adventure play park, has been specially developed for younger children and is themed on the Newhailes story.

Weehailes is designed for children aged 3–12 but children aged 0–15 are admitted.

All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 16 or over. An adult can supervise up to 6 children. We can admit a maximum of 2 adults per child.

Please note that you no longer need to book in advance!

Nature spotting

Newhailes Estate is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, with over 60 species of bird found here. These include blue, great and coal tits; chaffinches; bullfinches; chiffchaffs; and nuthatches. We’re also lucky to have a pair of barn owls, woodpeckers and bats.

Enjoy a peaceful stroll through the woodland and listen out for all the different bird song.

Trees and flowers
Our beautiful evergreen oaks were the first to be planted in Scotland, many, many years ago. We’re lucky to have many types of trees and foliage to bask in.
Our flower garden is currently under construction; however, wildflowers are abundant within the estate.

Designed landscape
Situated in 34 hectares of historical landscape, the Newhailes estate offers unspoilt views across the River Forth. There are several footpaths leading around the estate for all to enjoy.

Farmers and fields
Our fields have been historically farmed and grazed for many years. The fields are currently being used to grow barley with wide borders of wildflowers, creating a biodiverse environment.

Apiary
We have a small apiary, which is nestled in a quiet space. The new wildflower borders around our fields will create a superb food source for these amazing bees. We’ll also be running educational visits for children and adults, inspiring new generations.
