Stanley hill/ice house

This natural hillock, altered about 1730 for the 2nd Duke of Atholl, was designed to look like a mock fortification and once held a battery of small cannons on its terraces.

Set low down on the north east side is an Ice House, thought to date from c1830. In the days before electricity and fridges, people had to use natural means to try and keep food cool and, therefore, fresh. Besides preserving fish, meat, and other fresh produce, you could also serve your guests chilled drinks or even ice cream!
