Balmacara Square is the traditional heart of the Balmacara Estate. The original farm steading had grown from the late 18th-century simple stable, tack room and cart shed into an early 20th-century farm complex, with cottages, a mill and a mill pond.
Around 20 years ago, the square underwent extensive redevelopment. The old, abandoned farm steading was completely renovated into housing, workshops and a visitor centre, and the old mill pond was re-created, providing a picturesque focal point and picnic area for the square.
Balmacara Square now offers visitors a range of facilities and activities including the Steadings Gallery with a busy exhibition programme, a café, delicatessen and gift shop. The area around the old mill pond is suitable for picnics and there are several walks accessible from the public car park.
