Meet the Makers: Ella Fletcher from Ella Fletcher Designs
Please introduce yourself.
Hello, I’m Ella Fletcher from Ella Fletcher Designs. I’m a potter running my own studio with over 30 wholesale clients.
My studio is in a converted hay barn within the Rosemains Steading in Pathhead, Midlothian. Lots of exciting things take place around the steadings, and it’s an inspiring place to work and grow my business.
After moving back to Edinburgh in 2017 and starting pottery throwing lessons, I was hooked on ceramics and haven’t looked back since. My first studio was in a dingy basement, but not even that could hold me back. Since then, I’ve had to make a lot of brave leaps of faith to get to where I am today.
What products do you make/design/create?
I make colourful ceramic homewares designed to bring joy to the everyday, and make that morning cup of coffee just a little bit more special.
What makes your business unique?
As for most people, my business strategy has changed and evolved over the years; however, what makes mine special is that what I create is really personal to my customers. I love being a potter and running my business, and doing the two simultaneously drives the unique aspect of not only my products but also my whole brand and ethos. I want to encourage people to slow down and really think about the products they buy, especially for their homes.
Are there any interesting materials that you use?
I find glazes, in general, very interesting. They are made up of recipes of raw materials and chemicals that, once mixed, are applied to clay and then fired to extremely high temperatures, creating enduring designs that last for years and years – and yes, they are dishwasher-friendly!
Do you have any sustainable credentials you’d like to mention?
There’s little waste throughout the making process, as the clay can be reused until fired. Our leading clay supplier is based locally in Edinburgh, and we source all other materials from the UK where possible. All packaging is plastic-free or reused. Our studio is powered by a 100% renewable energy tariff and heated by the kilns.
What’s your favourite thing about your business?
I love the freedom and flexibility that being a creator affords me. It’s stressful at times but so rewarding, and I don’t take the ability to inject creativity into my day-to-day work for granted. If I’m allowed to work on a creative project for a client, I grab the opportunity with both hands!
What’s the proudest moment of your business career?
Attending my first trade show at Top Drawer in London with hundreds of other creative exhibitors and businesses was quite intimidating. However, I was voted ’Best Newcomer’, which was pretty special! Receiving an order from the National Trust for Scotland has also been a significant highlight. Having my work recognised by the largest membership organisation in Scotland is incredibly rewarding.
What is your favourite Trust place?
Last Easter, I visited the island of Iona. It was so beautiful, and my family and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I found the white sandy beaches particularly inspiring, and I can’t wait to return.
How did you start working with the Trust?
I was exhibiting at the Scottish Trade Fair, where I met Trust representatives and got chatting from there. It was such a massive compliment that they were interested in my work, and I couldn’t wait to tell the team back at the studio. Working with the Trust has been great, and I’m thrilled to see my pieces launched on their online shop!
What’s your favourite product that you supply to the Trust, and what inspired you to create it?
My favourite product is a large vase with the ‘Scottish Sunrise’ design. Paired with gorgeous tulips or peonies, the colours complement each other wonderfully and remind me of my time in Iona last spring. The glaze design is reminiscent of Scottish landscapes and the stunning sunrises and sunsets we see at this time of year, when the sunshine makes an appearance!
What do you love about Scotland?
It’s wild. The mountains paired with the long, often deserted beaches fringed by pine forests and wildflower meadows make it insanely pretty. Even just 20 minutes outside of Edinburgh, you can adventure somewhere that feels almost untouched. Although I wasn’t born here, it feels like home to me.
