Conservation

The entire archipelago of the Treshnish Isles was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1986 for its geology, maritime cliffs and seabird colonies.

Specific species such as the wintering barnacle geese and breeding storm petrels are protected by a Special Protection Area and the grey seal colonies and reefs by a Special Area of Conservation.

The sea around the Treshnish Isles is part of the Sea of the Hebrides Marine Protected Area (MPA), specifically designated to protect basking sharks and minke whales.

Donations to our Islands appeal will help the Trust’s teams carry out bird and wildlife counts, maintain biosecurity standards to keep wildlife safe, undertake archaeological and building surveys, and engage with visitors.
