Walled garden and glasshouses

Threave’s Victorian walled garden, one of the finest examples in southern Scotland, has produced fruit, vegetables and cut flowers since it was built in 1872. Originally it supplied the ‘big house’; now its produce features on the menu of the Terrace Café. Enjoy talking to our team of gardeners and students for tips on how to improve your own allotments, or simply rest a while on one of the garden benches and admire the colourful summer borders.

The yew-lined central avenue leads to the display glasshouse – a sensitive reconstruction of the original Victorian glasshouse. Inside, find three thematic rooms: a cool house, temperate house and hot house. We have lovely collections of cacti, orchids and bromeliads growing in here. Look out for our koi carp in their special indoor pond too – how many can you count?
