Sculpture studio

Just beside the castle in the old stable block, you can visit the recreated studio of sculptor Hew Lorimer, who lived and worked at Kellie for over 50 years. He worked in this studio until he was in his eighties, and it displays examples of his work – left as if Hew has just stepped outside to take a break.

Hew’s sculptural commissions that made his name included Our Lady of the Isles on South Uist (a towering 30ft sculpture of the Madonna and Child, for which the model is on display in the studio) and the allegorical figures of Medicine, Science, History, Poetry, Law, Theology and Music on the façade of the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh.
