At the time that Robert Burns was frequenting the Bachelors’ Club, it and the adjacent inn were owned by one John Richard, a local tradesman who owned several properties around the village. It seems that Richard lived in the building’s lower storey. It also seems possible that the byre part of this storey could have been used to brew beer, which would have been sold in the pub next door.
The Richard family bible is on display upstairs in the Bachelors’ Club.
