The Bachelors’ Club was a social hub in the community – a place for music, dancing, and debating. In 1779, a 20-year-old Robert Burns joined a country dancing class held in the upstairs hall of the Bachelors Club. He claimed it was to improve his manners, although the prospect of meeting some of the young ladies of the district would no doubt have provided some initial encouragement. Here, the young Burns danced to the strains of the famed Gregg fiddle (on display in the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum). This room is where he would later establish a local debating society.
