Trust pays tribute to Ken Calman
Ken, as he always insisted he be called by everyone he met, will be remembered as being kindly, wise and warmly engaged with all aspects of the Trust’s work. Although he had already given a lifetime’s worth of public service together with an array of impressive medical achievements, he gave up more of his valuable time to support the Trust as Chair of the new Board of Trustees established as part of the governance arrangements put in place following the review conducted by the Rt Hon Sir George Reid.
Sir Ken’s interest in Scotland’s heritage and culture was deep and this shone through in the way he guided the Trust’s strategic development. He sought to find agreement where there had been disagreement and used his undoubted ambassadorial skills for the Trust’s benefit on many occasions, notably in establishing a review of the management of the Mar Lodge Estate.
He was also passionate about volunteering and took every opportunity he could to go out and meet the people who gave up so much of their time to aid the Trust’s work, as well staff, members and visitors at our properties.
Sir Ken unquestionably set the Trust on course for the successes and achievements we enjoy today. We will miss him.
All of us at the National Trust for Scotland offer our condolences to his wife, Ann and the rest of the family.
