Second-hand bookshops across Scotland
Many of our places around Scotland have second-hand bookshops, offering a great selection of genres and titles. We’ve created this handy guide to help you explore them.
The Georgian House, Below Stairs Books
Step into the iconic Georgian House in Edinburgh’s New Town, where the Trust’s latest second-hand bookshop has opened. As you descend the stairs to the basement, you’ll be welcomed by a warm and cosy atmosphere, and inside, you’ll find a wonderful selection of books.
Castle Fraser, Garden & Estate
Castle Fraser looks as if it could have been pulled straight out of a fairytale. You can explore the collection of titles in the quaint little bookshop before settling in the beautiful walled garden to immerse yourself in the pages of your latest second-hand purchase.
Newhailes House & Gardens
The charming bookshop at Newhailes is a must-visit. Its inventory is frequently updated and carefully organised into fiction, non-fiction, and children’s categories. This delightful bookshop enhances the wonderful selection of activities available at the property, including an estate perfect for outdoor exploration and a café serving tasty treats.
Falkland Palace & Garden
On your next visit to Falkland Palace, be sure to check out the little corner in the reception area where second-hand books are available to purchase. With a carefully curated selection available, this nook of Falkland Palace has something for everyone.
Culzean Castle & Country Park
Culzean Castle & Country Park is vast, as is its collection of second-hand books. Within the Stable Block, you’ll find a treasure trove filled with a diverse array of stories for readers of all ages. It’s a cosy space to spend time on rainy days or pop in for a quick browse the next time you visit Culzean Castle.
The Friends of Culzean group has run this second-hand bookshop for over 10 years, and we are very grateful to them for their work and support at Culzean Castle & Country Park.
Hugh Miller’s Birthplace
Located in Cromarty, this charming cottage, once the home of Scottish geologist Hugh Miller, now hosts a delightful second-hand bookshop. The thatched roof and cosy atmosphere of Hugh Miller’s Birthplace reflect Miller’s legacy as one of the prominent Scots of the 19th century and an iconic author, making it an ideal location for one of our beloved bookshops.
House of Dun, The Wee Bookshop
The Wee Bookshop inhabits one of the buildings that make up the historic courtyard at House of Dun. Here, you’ll find an array of books belonging to several genres for visitors to browse and enjoy. Located alongside the Angus Folk Collection, a trip to the House of Dun is a great day out to experience a rich myriad of stories.
The Wee Bookshop was established by the Angus Members’ group, whose commitment and support are greatly appreciated.
Shopping second-hand is a great way to care for the environment, and every purchase supports our conservation efforts to protect the places in our care. Every book you buy or donate helps us protect these amazing places, allowing them to be enjoyed now and by future generations.
