Enlightenment House - A Play in Five Rooms showed the Charlotte Square house in a whole new light, says blogger Lauren Miller.

Edinburgh’s Georgian House was brought to life in this fabulous performance of A Play in Five Rooms which gives you a small tour whilst keeping you entertained and letting you see what the house looked like many years ago.

This interactive and comedic play is the perfect afternoon activity for Christmas. The sense of community and excitement began to build in the entrance of the House as members of the audience arrived; chatting and wondering what they were about to watch.

As we walked through the grand archway, music began to play and the lights began to dim. We were introduced to our first character who set the elegant tone of the play with his glistening jewellery and inspiring speech.

We were then guided into the dining room as we observed a conversation between two men while they finished their meal and drinks.

The twists and hilarity of the play really began once the lights switched on and the two men could see all the strange-looking people standing round their dinner table. Laughter filled the room as they began poking fun at audience members.

The fact that Georgian House is next door to the First Minister’s official residence also became a topic in the performance with the two actors pressing glasses up to the wall listening into discussions about Brexit and having a female in power.

The scene that takes place in the Drawing Room is one to remember. Audience members were invited up for Georgian dance lessons and included in various conversations between the actors. The thought-provoking yet hilarious performances meant that my emotions were constantly changing. One minute I was appreciating the advances we’ve made and the next I was being twirled around the Drawing Room by my Georgian ‘date’ and listening to the chef gossiping about the scandals of the house. Delicious hot chocolate is even given out in the kitchen.

The excitement grew when we discovered that we would be given 20% off every product in the gift shop. With local suppliers, this unique and quirky shop has something for everyone this Christmas.

Enlightenment House - A Play in Five Rooms ran until 5 January 2019.
