Chinese New Year: the Year of the Dog

Written by Project Reveal Team East
To welcome in the Year of the Dog, Project Reveal brings a Chinese wedding procession to life.
Newhailes House is full of treasures from China, and with the recent turning of the Chinese New Year, this is the perfect time to reveal some of them.

Among these treasures are Chinese wallpaper, Chinese furniture and even a whole room full of Chinese ceramics, known as the China Cabinet. However, it is in the Chinese Sitting Room that some of the most evocative Chinese pieces are kept. Trailing along one shelf are 40 exquisite, painted clay figures. They form a wedding procession, with musicians and lantern carriers surrounding a perfect sedan chair complete with bride.

Christophe Brogliolo, one of Team East’s photographers, has brought these figures to life with the videos you can see below.

Project Reveal is a Trust-wide collections digitisation project. It will result in an updated database with high quality images and unique object numbers for every item in the Trust material culture collections. Six regionally based project teams, supported by experienced project managers, will work across all of our properties with collections to complete the inventory in 18 months from July 2017 until December 2018.
