Read all about it...

Here’s a piece of printing history right here on Innerleithen High Street. Get your hands inky at this living museum of a thriving printing firm in the Borders, whose premises were more or less unchanged for over a century. Try your hand at being a printer’s apprentice to learn the almost forgotten art of letterpress printing and typesetting.

Robert Smail’s Printing Works celebrates a vital part of our industrial heritage and social history by giving you a hands-on demonstration of how things were printed not so long ago.
The machinery is kept in good working order as it is still used today for a variety of commercial print jobs, including some of the Trust’s own literature.

Why not explore the Smail's archive? Visit our microsite and find out more at http://www.nts.org.uk/smailsarchive
Did you know?

One of Smail’s most prized jobs was the beautifully ornate calendar they designed and printed every year. We still recreate these annually to their original designs.
