The highland capital of Inverness is beautifully set on the River Ness with a new theatre and cinema complex at Eden Court, an art gallery and excellent cafes and restaurants. You will find all the shops and services there to get your supplies for heading out to the spectacular surrounding mountain and coastal countryside. The spectacular Great Glen stretching south to Fort William along the side of Loch Ness, the massive Ben Wyvis to the north and the beautiful gentle Moray coast with the region's best castles and and historic sites; namely Brodie Castle (NTS) with its fabulous art collection gathered by seven generations of the Brodie family, Cawdor Castle ancestral home of the Campbell Clan and featuring in Shakespeare's Macbeth, Fort George the impressive Hanoverian bastion built after the Jacobite Rebellion and of course, Culloden the heart rending site of the infamous battle which ended Bonnie Prince Charlie's uprising. The Trust has a world-class award winning visitor centre there which is unmissable.
Cromarty on the Black Isle is a beautiful little Georgian town, home to Hugh Millers cottage and museum, where the great philosopher was born and spent much of his too short life. The surrounding countryside is perfect for beach walks, mountain biking and antique hunting and is only an hour and a half away from the big hills at Torridon (NTS). Other attractions in the area include Dunrobin Castle, ANTA, the design company, the Black Isle Brewery....the list is endless.
