What we protect

Every day, our members, volunteers and staff help us to look after an astonishing variety of things.
  • We’re the proud guardians of 100,000 artefacts, so they’ll never be lost to future generations.
  • We look after 46 Munros, including the 15 peaks and surrounding wilderness of the Cairngorms, helping to protect rare species like ptarmigan and golden eagles, while also providing safe and sustainable access for everyone.
  • We’re custodians of 38 gardens, 27 castles and houses and 8 National Nature Reserves

  • We conserve and care for 10,000 miles of Scottish coastline – a distance that would stretch from Glasgow to Beijing and back.
  • And we look after 76,000 hectares of countryside from Wester Ross to Ayrshire – that’s an area three times the size of Edinburgh.
