Iona is one of the most iconic and sacred places in Scotland. It is a place of pilgrimage and continuing community spirit, where the diversity of land and seascapes, and even the quality of the light, have been a source of inspiration for generations.

A sunny landscape view of Iona, with white cottages nestled against low craggy hills.

A series of trails cover the island, allowing you to discover the unique Hebridean machair, white sandy beaches, caves and Dùn Ì, a hill of 101m.

Distances from the pier

Columba’s Bay: 2½ miles (4km)
Dùn Ì: 1 mile (1.5km)
Marble quarry: 2 miles (3.5km)
Hermit’s Cell: 1¼ miles (2km)
St Martin’s Caves: 3 miles (4.5km)

Please take care when exploring the island – there is rough, boggy ground and steep gullies in the north-west and south of the island. Ensure that you have appropriate clothing and footwear before setting off.
