Planning your visit

Due to recent severe rainfall, please be aware that there is lots of mud and more exposed tree roots and rocks on the paths.

During the winter months, the car parks are gritted but the paths are not treated for ice – so please take care.

Even if it appears slow, the River Braan has a fast-flowing current, as well as the Black Linn Falls, and the large rocks are often slippery so please take care at the water’s edge and keep to the footpaths. Please ensure dogs are kept on leads in these areas for their own safety.

During your visit you may see coins in tree stumps or even living trees. Please don’t do this as it’s damaging the trees and can poison other wildlife.

Please also note that we don’t allow any open fires or BBQs in the Hermitage at any time of year, to help us protect this beautiful woodland. If you are wild camping, please only use a small gas stove – unless it is during a period of high wildfire risk, when we ask that stoves are not used either. Thank you for your support in helping us to look after this very special place.

Please note that Ossian’s Hall and other areas will be closed during certain times when the site is booked for a wedding. Please check our Facebook or Instagram page for these dates prior to your arrival.

You can arrange a private tour of the Hermitage with a ranger.

Please see our drop-down Facilities below for helpful information about planning your visit. For more information about planning your visit please see our frequently asked questions.

Facilities & access

  • Path surfaces vary but the ground is uneven and can be rocky, with slopes and steps.

We have an ongoing programme of accessible content development. Detailed accessibility guides for the most visited Trust places are available on our Accessibility pages as well as links to useful resources.

We’d love you to visit the Euan’s Guide website to review the accessibility of Trust places and tell us (and others) what’s good and where we need to do better.

3G/4G coverage
  • There are disabled parking spaces in the lower car park. There is no charge for Blue Badge holders.
  • If arranged in advance, disabled drivers may drive to Ossian’s Hall along the track, but great care must be taken and hazard lights used along the way. Parking is restricted.

Toilets on site until 31 October, located in the lower car park area. Open 9am–5pm daily.

There is a small bike rack in the lower car park next to the picnic tables – please note all bikes are left at the owners’ own risk.

Buggy access

There are designated spaces for coaches in the top car park (the lower car park is unsuitable for coaches and 16-seater minibuses).

Dogs are welcomed at the Hermitage as long as they are kept under control at all times.

Dogs (with the exception of assistance dogs) are not permitted in Ossian’s Hall for the comfort of all visitors. It is a confined space, and the amplified sound of the waterfall inside the hall may upset your pet. There is a ‘dog parking post’ to the left of the entrance door so that dogs can be close to their owner while they visit the hall.

Echoes of gunfire from clay pigeon shooting can occasionally be heard in certain areas. If your dog is spooked by these noises please ensure they are kept on a lead.

Please note that during wedding events on the site you may be asked to put your dog on a lead.

The Pay & Display car park (£3 per vehicle, free for members) is 1½ miles from Ossian’s Hall and the Black Linn Falls.

There are picnic tables in the car park.
