Gladstone's Land Lecture Series - Tenement: A Scottish Vernacular

Taking place at

Edinburgh & The Lothians

Date

7 Nov

Details

Tenements define Scotland’s cities and towns – they’ve been the backdrop to Scottish history for over 400 years. All too often, the restrained beauty of the humble tenement is overlooked for its contribution to the urban fabric in which we live today. How did the tenemental way of life that developed in Scotland during the 16th century begin? How has the architectural form developed alongside, and influenced, the social developments in Scotland, from the early examples of tenements such as Gladstone’s Land to today’s social housing?

Join architect John Joseph Burns to explore the architectural development of Scottish tenements and the links to the social history of the cities and towns they define.
