Mother’s Day craft: plantable seed paper hearts

Written by Alison McAllister
A green pot with earth sits next to a homemade card with seed paper hearts. Four seed paper hearts lie on some earth next to the pot, and a pink and purple pot is stacked behind.
These plantable seed paper hearts make a lovely gift for Mother’s Day.

A pencil, paintbrush, roll of greaseproof paper, tissue paper, scissors, small bowl of seeds, mixing bowl, jug of water and bottle of PVA glue, sit on a rainbow coloured background.

How to make your seed paper hearts

Step 1

Squeeze some PVA glue into your mixing bowl and add warm water. Give it a stir until the water turns white.

Step 2

Place one piece of tissue paper onto your tray. Brush on the watered-down glue until the sheet is fully covered.

Step 3

Lightly sprinkle half of your wildflower seeds over the sticky paper.

Step 4

Repeat the last two steps until you have a tissue paper sandwich.

Step 5

Leave the paper to dry. It will firm up, and the ends might curl a little, but that’s OK. Once dry, take your pencil and draw your heart shapes onto the paper. Don’t press too hard or the paper might tear!

Step 6

Carefully cut out your seed paper hearts.

Step 7

You can arrange your seed hearts onto a homemade Mother’s Day card or tie them in a bundle with a small piece of string, ready to gift.

Step 8

Gift your seed paper hearts on Mother’s Day! You could offer to help plant them too, so you get to spend some quality time together.

Top tip

  • Don’t bin your scraps! If they’ve got seeds in them, you can plant them and enjoy your own wildflowers.
