Jennifer Melville studied at Aberdeen and Manchester Universities and received her PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 2000. Her background is in fine art, with a special interest in late 19th and early 20th century fine & applied art and interiors and contemporary art.

Whilst in her previous post at Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums she curated exhibitions on several Scottish artists including John Phillip and William Dyce and thematic exhibitions, such as a selection of the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery which toured to seven venues in Japan in 2000. Her acquisitions focused on contemporary art and she was Scottish chair of The Visual Arts and Galleries Association and also on the steering group of Artist Rooms – Anthony d’Offay’s gift of contemporary art to the nation.

Since moving to NTS her primary focus has moved to the many properties and varied collections in her care. Her current research area is the American artist John Singer Sargent and his connections to Scotland.
