In 1997 Ian moved to Scotland and studied Art History and Ancient History at St Andrews University, graduating in 2002 with a joint First Class honours degree. After spending two summers guiding at Kellie Castle and Hill of Tarvit in Fife, Ian was appointed to the role of the Trust’s Archives Assistant, although without an Archivist to assist. The last twelve years has been filled with attempting to get to grips with the Trust’s large and ever-growing corporate archive, understanding where it is held and formulating an archive cataloguing system. Added to this Ian has assisted with the management of the collections of estate and family records held at some of the Trust’s properties including Brodie Castle, Drum Castle, Kellie Castle and others.

During this time Ian qualified as a professional archivist via a distance learning course at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Current projects include the re-boxing and auditing of the Brodie archive, being involved in the Inverewe signature project, attempting to put online a series of historic St Kilda diaries and continuing to work on the Trust’s corporate archive. He has a specific interest in the foundation of the NTS by studying the Trust’s own historic archive.
