The National Trust for Scotland’s archives provides a unique and fascinating insight into both the history of the organisation and the Trust’s properties. The archives collections encompass day-to-day administrative archive files as well as historic documents and manuscripts. There are two main strands to the NTS archives: the institutional archive and the many and various collections of historic archive collections of family and estate papers, often held at Trust properties.

The National Trust for Scotland’s archive is one of the organisation’s key assets and plays a major role in underpinning all aspects of the Trust’s activities and functions.

Below is a series of simple but informative guides to the Trust’s archive collections. They explain the Trust’s institutional archives, the Special collections of archives held at the Trust’s Head Office and some of its properties, and also outline the procedures for access to the archives.

For further information about the Trust’s archives, in particular the archives catalogues, please contact the NTS Archivist Ian Riches on 0844 493 2474 or at
