Thankfully the Smails were hoarders and a treasure trove of materials remain at the property; including some 52 guard books of everything they printed, bound volumes of the local newspaper, passenger tickets, ledgers, personal correspondence and more.
The collection is a fascinating insight into the operation of this bustling business and local life.
Trust staff and volunteers have been carefully archiving this invaluable collection and you can search through the first additions here, and even print off the results.
Over time more of the collection will be made available to search and view online.
