On June 18, Beth Talbot received the 2009 Marsh Volunteers for Museum Learning Award. The award, presented by the British Museum and the Marsh Christian Trust, recognizes volunteers’ contributions to best practices and innovation in engaging museum audiences. A ceremony was held at the British Museum to recognize the 12 regional winners with Beth being named the overall winner as well as regional winner for Scotland.
As a volunteer at Pollok House, Beth has worked with a variety of museum audiences organizing Victorian workshops for primary school children, teaching schoolchildren how to care for museum objects, creating themed weekends for family days out at the museum, hosting leadership training days for teens, and supporting art classes and workshops at Pollok. Her enthusiasm is greatly appreciated by visitors and her commitment to volunteering full-time has increased access to the House, particularly for school groups.
Alison Burke, Learning Officer, is proud of Beth’s work saying, “She is a huge asset to our charity and we are very pleased that her efforts have been recognised at a UK level.” Beth, together with the 3,500 volunteers throughout the Trust, is a shining example of how integral volunteering is to the work of conserving Scotland’s heritage.
