Brand New visitor centre for one of Scotland’s most significant historic sites
Culloden battlefield is one of Scotland’s most significant historic sites and has been in the care of The National Trust for Scotland since 1937. Scene of the last stand of the Jacobite rebellion, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746, it is almost unparalleled in its haunting, evocative atmosphere. Not surprisingly, it is one of the Trust’s most popular attractions, recognised internationally as a major battlefield site.
Culloden was the last major battle fought on British soil and changed the way of life of the Highlands forever. In the aftermath of the fighting, severe and repressive measures were taken to crush the rebellion once and for all – and to ensure that such a threat to the throne did not occur again.
The impact of Culloden and its aftermath continues to echo down the centuries and across the world. For descendants of the Scottish and Highland Diaspora, the battle evokes a powerful emotional response. Many Highland families suffered great hardship in the wake of Culloden. Many people today believe that the extensive emigration of the late 18th century to the New World resulted from Culloden.
Visiting Culloden is, for many, a place of pilgrimage. The battlefield holds great spiritual significance as a war grave and as a memorial to the fallen of both sides. It stands as a symbol of loyalty and courage as well as a sobering reminder of the brutality of conflict. It was the final phase in a long journey that tested to the limit the ideals, stamina and honour of thousands of soldiers.
