There are several established funds within The National Trust for Scotland that you may wish to consider when leaving a legacy. Of course, if you have something or somewhere that you would specifically like to leave your legacy to that isn’t listed here then we would be happy to discuss your preferences with you. The Mountainous Country Fund
Set up in 1943 to endow mountainous properties belonging to the Trust and to acquire further mountainous properties.
The Footpath Fund
For the annual maintenance of footpaths on Trust properties. It is increasingly important to repair the erosion caused by large numbers of visitors.
The Coastline and Islands Fund
Used for the conservation of the Trust’s coastal and island properties and to assist with acquisitions.
The Countryside Conservation Fund
To be used specifically for the conservation of land rather than buildings, and for land which does not qualify for the Mountainous Country Fund.
The Wildlife Fund
Set up in 1954 to finance the protection of animals and birds, with particular reference to the provision of bird sanctuaries.
Historic Buildings Repair Fund
Set up in 1989 with a legacy from Walter Scott-Davidson, this fund contributes towards the maintenance and restoration of the historic buildings in the care of the Trust.
The Contents Fund
To allow for the purchase and maintenance of furniture, pictures and other works of art for Trust properties. This is particularly needed if items that ‘belong’ historically to a property are offered to the Trust or come onto the market.
The Gardens Fund
Built up over a number of years to provide income for the management of the Trust’s gardens
The Famous Scots Fund
Launched in 1976 to support the shrines of famous Scots in the care of the Trust: the birthplaces of JM Barrie and Thomas Carlyle, Hugh Miller’s Cottage, the two Burns’ properties (Souter Johnnie’s Cottage, Bachelors’ Club) and the David Livingstone Centre.
The Education Fund
Assists with the provision of educational material for both teachers and pupils, and the equipping of Trust properties for educational purposes, in which the Trust is committed to play a prominent role.
The Bute Memorial Fund
Set up in 1993 in memory of the 6th Marquess of Bute. The fund finances a graduate in fine art conservation techniques to improve his/her skills in their chosen field under technical supervision.
