About the Project

As part of Robert Smail’s Printing Works 150 years celebrations, in collaboration with St. Ronan’s Primary School and Innerleithen Community Trust, this project aimed to use Smail’s photographic collections and those held in the Community Archives, to explore the changing and unchanging face of Innerleithen over the last century.

Working with local photographer, Graham Riddell, the St. Ronan’s Primary School’s P6s selected historical images from the collections and captured new images of the same locations. The pupils interpreted the images, identifying differences and similarities and described these changes with a little help from Smail’s and Community Trust researchers. In addition to the online collections, as part of the project, Smail’s has produced a series of 16 postcards with the old and new images, which are available to buy from the Printing Works Shop.
