Photographs featured in paintings

Hornel's trip to Japan in 1893 taught him to see the world with a different eye.

He joined Japan's Photographic Society, attending tea houses, theatres, exhibitions and photo sessions. He purchased hundreds of commercial photographs.

Hornel returned to Japan in 1920 and obtained more photos of dancers, informally posed in a studio setting wearing traditional costume.

The influence of all this Japanese photography is clearly evident in Hornel's paintings.
