As the summer holidays get underway, conservation charity the National Trust for Scotland says it’s the perfect place for family fun. Whatever the weather, the Trust has plenty of family entertainment in the calendar, all over the country.
Families Marketing Manager Carly Lamberty said: “There’s no need to worry about keeping the family entertained this summer – the Trust is just bursting with ideas for visitors of all ages, whatever the weather and wherever you are in Scotland.“
Some of the highlights this summer are:
Quest for the Golden Ticket, Pollok House, Glasgow - daily from 1 July to 31 August
Solve the puzzle of Pollok House and be in with a chance of winning a great prize! The ever popular mystery quiz and trail at Pollok House takes an interesting turn this year – visitors have to answer questions and solve a riddle to secure a golden ticket. Much like in the beloved Roald Dahl story – golden ticket holders could then be in for a big prize, including a short break at a Trust holiday home, a family membership and more!
Children’s Tours with the Housekeeper, Haddo House, Ellon every Thursday from 5 July to 16 August, 14.00
Find out more about the tasks undertaken at crack of dawn by young servants of yesteryear - coals, pails, bells ringing, fetching and carrying, it was all go. Meanwhile, those upstairs enjoyed a very different lifestyle. Suitable for children aged five to twelve, with costumes provided, the special tours cost £5 per child. One adult is allowed free accompanying a child, with tickets priced at £5 for additional adults.
The Railway Children, Newhailes, Musselburgh – 14 July, 18.00
The much-loved tale of The Railway Children is performed by Heartbreak Productions, bringing the moving story of Bobbie, Peter and Phil to life in the romantic landscape of Newhailes. Tickets cost £12 for adults and £6 for children and can be booked online at www.nts.org.uk/events
Jousting at Castle Fraser, Castle Fraser near Inverurie – 21 and 22 July, 11.00 – 16.00
The drama of medieval knights battling for honour and glory comes to Castle Fraser, one of Aberdeenshire’s oldest castles this summer. The Knights of the Damned will showcase the skills, weaponry and tactics of jousting. Thrills, spills and drama are guaranteed. There will also be archery and sword skills demos, falconry, medieval cooking and camping and much more. Advance tickets cost £8.50 for adults, £6 for children/ concessions and £23 for a family and can be booked at www.nts.org.uk/events.
Summer Fayre at Culzean Castle and Country Park, Maybole – 29 July, 10.30 – 16.00
Spend a fabulous family day at the stunning Culzean Castle and Country Park. With local food, arts and crafts on sale, a dog show, performances from Maybole Pipe Band and lots of other entertainment too, there really is something for all the family whether they are on four legs or two!

Guided tours only. Tours last approx 1¼ hours, starting every 30 mins from Visitor Centre. First tour departs 12.00; last tour departs 3.30pm. Please allow 15 mins prior to tour departure to collect tickets and view introductory film.
