Family friendly
There’s no shortage of fun things to do in the grounds of the property. Budding nature detectives will especially enjoy our minibeast safaris and ranger-led walks among the woods and grasslands. Or go in search of bugs and beasties yourself, by hiring one of our Explorer Packs which will arm you with magnifying glass, collecting jars and spotter cards.

There’s a host of outdoor events all year round, many of them perfect for a family day out – from outdoor theatre performances and butterfly walks in summer, to our popular bat and moth nights at dusk. On certain days in summer you can even explore the estate by taking a Segway tour! There’s also ‘Christmas in the Courtyard’, when Santa drops in to our stable block for an afternoon of festive fun.

Newhailes has its share of mysteries and surprises. Find out about the jib door in the best bedroom, and the significance of the many shell motifs found all over the house and estate. Children can have fun seeing how many they can count, along with the number of false doors – designed to retain the building’s symmetry.

Shop, Stables Cafe and Visitor Centre 29 Mar to 1 Apr, Fri-Mon 11-5; 6 Apr to 29 Apr, Sat-Mon 11-4; 2 May to 30 Sep, Thur-Mon 11-5; 1 Oct to 31 Oct, Sat/Sun 11-4.

Guided tours only. Tours last approx 1¼ hours, starting every 30 mins from Visitor Centre. First tour departs 12.00; last tour departs 3.30pm. Please allow 15 mins prior to tour departure to collect tickets and view introductory film.
