    Learn how to worm charm and find out how amazing worms are, be prepared to get a little muddy.

    4th Aug – Meadow safari

    Let’s have some fun on the grasslands of Newhailes. We will meet our skylark friends and find out what bugs and beasties are in the grass.

    1st Sept – Batty Bats

    Find out what bats we have at Newhailes estate and where they live. Enjoy some batty games and crafts to finish.

    3rd Nov – Leaves and Fruit

    What Natural art can we make out of leaves and fruit (Be prepared to get mucky).

    Children must be accompanied by an adult. We will be outside so warm, waterproof clothes are a must.

    We'll be spotting wildlife, learning about the Dalrymple family and stretching our legs around our beautiful landscape.

    A walk through time in benefit of Scotland's Gardens Yellow Book open Day

    We are undertaking an exciting conservation project to restore the Newhailes historic landscaped garden. Join us as we reveal the history and future of this beautiful garden.

    Details

    An 18th century designed landscape surrounds the main house and includes a raised walkway, the enchanting and mysterious shell grotto, tea house, a water garden and a number of different walks and paths. In 2015 the Trust embarked upon a major project to restore several areas of the landscape including the Flower Garden, Ha Ha and the Walled Kitchen Garden utilizing extensive archive research including the papers of Miss Christian Dalrymple and archaeological excavations.

    Guided talk £2.00, non-member parking £2.00. Normal admission applies if visiting the house.

    Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds.

    Join us for our 2nd Annual Dog Show!

    The Dog Show was a great hit last year, with Sandy the Lurcher winning Best in Show! We also saw some great fancy dress costumes, adorable puppies and wonderful rescue dogs!

    Come visit us again this year on July 17th from 11-4. There will be LOTS of dogs, some local stall-holders, including VETS4PETS offering some free advice, as well as Edinburgh Dog & Cat Home, and Barking Cat Pet Photography who will have a 'pop-up' photography studio on site!

    The Dog Show is FREE for spectators!

    There is no reserved seating. Please make sure you bring you own low seating/rugs.

    If you'd like to enter your dog into any of the classes, the cost is £5 for initial entry and £2/class thereafter. No need to book ahead just make sure you bring cash with you on the day.

    Our booking table will be open from 10 am that day and will stay open until 3 pm.

    There will be no wet weather provision.

    Join the NTS rangers as they take you on a bat walk at Newhailes.

    If you would like to know the difference between a common and soprano pipistrelle bat then this walk is for you.

    A Lothian ranger will do a brief talk on bats then we will be using bat detectors to find the bats' echolocation sounds.

    There will be a chance to see a bat box where bats have roosted and to ask the ranger lots of questions about bats.

    Outdoor shoes and warm clothing a must.

    It's advisable to bring a torch.

Discover 300 years of Scottish history through this magnificent and carefully conserved neo-Palladian villa. Newhailes is famed for having some of the finest rococo interiors in Scotland.

There are sumptuous decorative details at every turn, from the gilded eagles over the drawing room windows to the exquisite Chinese wallpaper and imposing Italian marble fireplaces.

A major part of the house’s charm is its mellow feel. Newhailes has been allowed to grow old gracefully through a pioneering conservation policy which does ‘as much as is necessary, but as little as possible’ to keep the house in good order without disturbing its ‘untouched’ atmosphere.
