GARDEN HISTORY – INFORMING CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT

    Details

As custodian of many of Scotland’s finest gardens and designed landscapes, the National Trust for Scotland possesses a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the business of caring for this important part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

As well as introducing participants to the subject of garden history, this course will explore the singular complexities of garden management and conservation – where to source information, how to interpret the evidence to tell the story of a garden, and how to use this in making management decisions.

Since acquiring the estate of Newhailes in 1997, the Trust has faced a number of conservation challenges to do with the house and designed landscape, and with public access. An introduction to the property will be followed by a practical exercise, intended to illustrate some of the factors affecting management decisions, and the processes by which these are reached.

Discover 300 years of Scottish history through this magnificent and carefully conserved neo-Palladian villa. Newhailes is famed for having some of the finest rococo interiors in Scotland.

There are sumptuous decorative details at every turn, from the gilded eagles over the drawing room windows to the exquisite Chinese wallpaper and imposing Italian marble fireplaces.

A major part of the house’s charm is its mellow feel. Newhailes has been allowed to grow old gracefully through a pioneering conservation policy which does ‘as much as is necessary, but as little as possible’ to keep the house in good order without disturbing its ‘untouched’ atmosphere.
