    1 May – Natty Newts at NTS Inveresk Lodge Gardens (EH21 7TE): See these natty newts up close and make one to take home.

    5 June – Colour Catchers: Go on a colour hunt around the grounds and make a beautiful butterfly.

    We take a break for the summer holidays in July.

    7 Aug – Fun with Flowers: Ever wanted to watch a plant grow? Now’s your chance! You can make a nature bracelet and hat too.

    4 Sep – Windy Wilderness: Make your own bubbles and flag to claim your wilderness.

    2 Oct – Greenman Walking Sticks and Fairy Wands: Fashion your own Greenman walking stick or Fairy wand then take it for a nature walk around Newhailes’ grounds.

    6 Nov – Hungry Hungry… Birds!: Get messy making your own bird feeders to take home.

    4 Dec – Christmas Cards: Create Christmas cards to share with your family and friends.

    Children must be accompanied by an adult. We will be outside so wellies and warm, waterproof clothes are a must.

    A popular favourite since it was first performed, this great story of superstition, ambition, and retribution, takes the audience on a roller-coaster ride from a ‘blasted heath’, through a Scottish Castle, to a moving Forest.

    Three weird and mysterious sisters, a ghost-ridden banquet, murder, prophecies, visions, and spells are all ingredients in this swirling cauldron which is Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”.

    Performed by The Festival Players Theatre Company in front of the house at Newhailes.

    If you have a camera and want to learn how to take fantastic pictures of wildlife and gardens, then this is the event for you.

    Join us at Newhailes and be guided by the National trust for Scotland's expert Photo Librarian who will teach you all about landscapes and macro photography, file quality, shutter speeds, use of flash, use of filters, digital workflow, compostion and light plus much more.

    The Lothian Ranger Service will provide expert advice and local knowledge on Newhailes flora and fauna to help you get the most from the day.

    Tea, coffee and a sandwich lunch will be provided.

  • Newhailes:  A Secret Garden Revealed

    Newhailes: A Secret Garden Revealed

    Dates:Thu 18 Sep - Mon 22 Sep Location:Newhailes

    We will be having a big dig over 5 days in September at Newhailes from the 18th to the 22nd which is part of East Lothian Archaeology and Local History Fortnight – www.eastlothian.gov.uk/archaeology led by National Trust for Scotland archaeologist Dr Daniel Rhodes.

    This will run from 9.30-4.30 each day and diggers can sign up at www.eastlothian.gov.uk/archaeology or just turn up on any day to join in and have a go or come along and watch.

    We will be uncovering some of our best hidden gems of our amazing landscape at Newhailes which is one of the most unique and complete 18th C designed landscapes in Scotland. We will be digging or undertaking geophysics in our Kitchen Garden, Flower Garden, Ha ha and Curling Pool.

    The dig will allow us to gather valuable information on the exact layout of these landscape features in order to embark on their restoration or interpretation in future years.

There are sumptuous decorative details at every turn, from the gilded eagles over the drawing room windows to the exquisite Chinese wallpaper and imposing Italian marble fireplaces.

A major part of the house’s charm is its mellow feel. Newhailes has been allowed to grow old gracefully through a pioneering conservation policy which does ‘as much as is necessary, but as little as possible’ to keep the house in good order without disturbing its ‘untouched’ atmosphere.
