Kintail and Morvich is a wild and remote area, and many of the walks require a high level of skill and experience. However, the area still has plenty to offer youngsters. There are some low-level walks, particularly around Gleann Lichd and the coastal areas, and there are several Ranger-led tours of the area that are suitable for children. Take them on the Otters and Orchids coastal walk on the Balmacara Estate, where they can hear about the crofting way of life, and hopefully see some otters. Other wildlife to look out for includes red deer, golden eagles, ptarmigan and even wild goats.
Adventurous kids can try their hand at sea kayaking, a popular outdoor activity that’s great fun for all ages. The Rangers run taster sessions for beginners as well as longer trips for those with more experience. If they’re really lucky, they might even get to spot a whale while they’re on the water!
If tales of bloody battles will interest the kids, take the Ranger-led Battle of Glen Shiel guided walk to hear all about the Jacobite rebellion of 1719 and see where it happened.
