  • The Man Who Left The Titanic

Dates:Wed 8 Jun Location:Hill of Tarvit Mansion and Kingarrock Hickory Golf

A play by Patrick Prior recounts the events of 15 April 1912 when the Titanic, the greatest ship in the world, slipped below frigid waters of the Atlantic and examines the nightmare of J. Bruce Ismay - the man who left the Titanic.

    Details

One hundred and one years on, the tragic story of the Titanic continues to grip the imagination of many.

The ‘unsinkable’ sank, and 1,500 people lost their lives.

The colossal disaster of the First World War was just around the corner and the Titanic seemed to be the warning that even the mightiest of things could crumble.

In the freezing waters of the North Atlantic 700 people survived the big ship’s clash with a massive iceberg.

One of the survivors, J.Bruce Ismay, paid a heavy personal price for his escape. As Chairman of the White Star Line, he was expected to ‘do the right thing’ and go down with the ship.

Instead, he stepped into a lifeboat and was rowed away from the stricken vessel. He was pilloried and scorned for the remaining 25 years of his life, and became a lonely recluse.

‘The Man who left the Titanic’ examines this nightmare, as Ismay is haunted by the ghost of Thomas Andrews, the main designer of the ship. Andrews lost his life in the tragedy and became a hero.

The vitriol Ismay faced permeates the play, but the question remains – would we do anything different at such a moment? Was he a coward or merely human?

The play is performed by Pat Abernethy as Ismay, and Dave Marsden as Andrews, and is an Isosceles production. It has been performed to great critical acclaim in theatres from

London to Cork to Belfast to Inverness and continues to enthrall it’s audiences.

How better to spend an afternoon than sitting in the impressive surrounds of the Great Hall at Hill Of Tarvit whilst enjoying Mozart's Clarinet Concerto.

    Details

Musical Director Maximillian Fane (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) conducts his talented orchestra in an intimate live performance of one of Mozart's best-loved works.

Whilst the singers warm up for the Raucous Rossini perfomance of Il Singor Bruschino later in the evening (see the events page for further details), the orchestra will perform one of Mozart's last works.

Written in 1791, and the composers final purely instrumental work (he died less than two moths after it's premiere) the concerto is notable for its delicate interplay between soloist and orchestra, and for subtlety of the soloist.

Step back to the early 1900s and enjoy a grand day out, Edwardian-style! Play our hickory lawn games and a spot of croquet, try your hand at billiards, outwit your chums in fun parlour games and more. Hill of Tarvit is one of Scotland's finest Edwardian mansionhouses, replete with a splendid collection of antiques, furniture, Chinese porcelain and superb paintings by Sir Henry Raeburn, Allan Ramsay and eminent Dutch artists.

The original 17th-century Wemyss House was remodelled in 1906 by Sir Robert Lorimer for wealthy jute manufacturer Frederick Sharp to showcase his outstanding collection of French, Chippendale-style and locally influenced furniture, porcelain and art accumulated by several generations of the prosperous Sharp family.

Surrounding Hill of Tarvit are gardens, woods, open heath and parkland to explore. Robert Lorimer also designed the landscaped gardens, with formal lawns, yew hedging, flowering borders and a sunken rose garden.

One of the property’s major attractions is the original 9-hole hickory club golf course, which is now completely restored, giving golfers a rare opportunity to turn back the clock and enjoy the game as it was played in Edwardian times.

Nearby is Scots Tarvit Tower, which is a must see. The key can be collected from reception at the mansion.
