Scotland's Gardens - Open DayKellie Castle & GardenSun 28 JulKellie Castle and Balcaskie Estate joint open day in aid of Scotland's Gardens.
This superb garden is around 400 years old and was sympathetically restored by the Lorimer family in the late 19th century. The Arts and Crafts style garden has a selection of herbaceous plants, fernery and lovely scented old-fashioned roses - some of which are very rare.
The design unveils to the visitor a succession of views and has separate corner gardens offering a sense of tranquility and seclusion accompanied by birdsong. Visitors can rest and enjoy the beautiful blending of formal structure and informal planting on Hew Lorimer’s bench-taking in the spectacular summer flowering nepeta set against striking delphiniums and roses.
This garden is cultivated organically, has vegetables, beautifully wall-trained fruit and hosts an amazing 30 varieties of rhubarb and 75 different types of apple. Be on the look-out for the innovative cordoned gooseberries, bee skep niches in the wall, scarecrows made by local school children and the Scott’s Dumpy chickens scratching about. Seasonal garden produce is available for sale.
Don’t forget to take in the view on your way in - the entrance to the walled garden has breathtaking views over the Firth of Forth across to Bass Rock and Berwick Law. The garden also features a woodland walk, children’s play area and wildflower meadow to picnic in.
This open day event is run jointly with Balcaskie (a private garden not normally open to visitors). This is your opportunity to view a beautiful garden that is being restored as a part of a collaboration with the NTS. A free minibus and open top tractor will take visitors from Kellie Castle to Balcaskie.
