Experience a day in the life of the Stuart monarchs at Falkland Palace, their country residence for 200 years – and a favourite place of Mary, Queen of Scots. Set in the heart of Falkland conservation village, and surrounded by extensive gardens, this partly restored Renaissance palace is the perfect place to while away an afternoon.

Part of the castle has crumbled, but there’s still plenty to discover inside the surviving sections. The original and reconstructed rooms are packed with 17th-century Flemish tapestries, elaborate painted ceilings and antique furnishings.

The beautiful, tranquil grounds are worth a visit alone. They’re home to the oldest real (or royal) tennis court in Britain, built for King James V, as well as a gardens designed by Percy Cane.
Did you know?

The icon of the Virgin Mary in the Chapel Royal was made out of corned beef tins and cartridge cases by Polish soldiers billeted here during the Second World War
