    Help us celebrate the opening of our bird hide by the walled garden. Test your knowledge and observation skills in our Feathered Friends quiz through the woodland and gardens and then take part in our budding artist bird drawing and photographic competitions.

    The winners will get their works of art displayed on our facebook page and in the bird hide itself.

    The quiz and competitions will run from 4th April until 29th May, quizzes available from the castle during normal opening hours with competition details on the reverse. Quizzes £1.00

    Joint Scottish Wildlife Trust & National Trust for Scotland event with local expert Juliette Dinning. A dragonfly and damselfly walk at Castle Fraser to the Flight Pond, home of the rare Northern Damselfly.

    Meet in the car park and walk to the Flight pond where we have 10 recorded species of dragonfly and damselfly which makes this a special pond for the NE of Scotland. Our species include the red data book species the Northern Damselfly a real northern specialist, the Azure damselfly, a recent coloniser of the area and 8 other species, totalling 6 damselflies and 4 dragonflies. Come along and learn more about their life cycles, ecology and ID.

    Juliette is a local dragonfly expert and enthusiast who has been studying damselflies, especially the Northern damselfly for many years and will inspire you to learn more about these fascinating creatures.

    Walking along woodland paths, steps and slopes, please contact us if you have any special mobility requirements

    No dogs and children need to be accompanied by an adult, bring close focus binoculars if you have any.

    Collect a butterfly quiz from the log cabin and head off round the gardens in search of butterflies, caterpillars their homes and food!

    Try your hand at our butterfly crafts or make a crazy caterpillar, also in the log cabin.

    Join us to open the moth traps set up the night before. Will we have any moths? This can depend on the weather overnight so hope for a dry mild night and come and see what we have got. Moth trap opening 12.00pm

    This midsummer brings a bit of medieval madness to Castle Fraser.

    Details

    Delight in the live music and join in the dancing from the medieval period. Why not also try your hand at long-bow archery, jousting or just doing battle (children versus adults)?! There are mischievous jestering goings-on throughout the day, arming the knight, and swordsmanship training.

    We have so many activities on offer for children and adults alike – a real treat the whole family can enjoy. Games, mischievous characters, facepainting and more are all included in the ticket price.

    Medieval style food will also be on offer throughout the day to keep your energy levels up for all the activities

    Dogs are allowed on the grounds so long as they are kept on a lead.

Castle Fraser is an atmospheric baronial castle dating back to the 15th century and was the ancestral home of the Fraser family. As you venture through the castle and up to the round tower, with its panoramic views of the gardens and estate beyond, you get a sense of life from the medieval to the Victorian period.

Although the main castle was completed around 1636, there were several 18th and 19th-century alterations. To a large extent the story of Castle Fraser is the story of its lairds. It retains the atmosphere of the family home with portraits, furniture and mementos.

Highlights include the Great Hall dating back to the 1400s, a library filled with family books, and the grand Worked Room featuring 18th-century embroideries. The estate has two easily followed trails taking you through a mixture of parkland, farmland and woodland, opening out to give views of Bennachie.
