Changing exhibitions can be viewed on both the lower ground and upper floors, providing opportunities to see rare books and treasures from Hornel’s extensive collections. These displays are included in your admission ticket. Please see our access information.

Our lower ground museum space currently showcases Japanese rare books and hand-coloured garden catalogues, clothing and artefacts along with unique photographs of traditional costumes and local scenes, all collected by Hornel during his lengthy visits to Japan in 1893 and 1920.

View the work of award-winning artist Ewan McClure – a finalist in the Sky Arts Portrait Artist and BP Portrait competitions – in Hornel’s Studio as he prepares for his next exhibition. Email Ewan to discuss private commissions (prices include a charitable donation to the Trust).

The Burns Collection and Hornel’s extensive publication archives are available to access by appointment for those involved in academic, family and local history research. Please make an appointment at least three weeks in advance by completing an Archive Request (charges may be applicable).
