There’s plenty for children to see and do at Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve. During the summer the Rangers host regular guided walks for young nature-lovers, with activities and games that get them hands-on with the plants, birds and insects that live on the lower slopes.

You don’t have to wait for the Rangers though: the Edramucky Trail is a great self-guided walk, with booklet, that’s perfectly suitable for children. Get them to play detective and spot signs of wildlife – burrows, footprints and droppings are all dead giveaways – or see how many flowers, trees and other plants they can identify.

You can also give them a vivid history lesson by taking them up to the shielings – they’ll be fascinated to hear about how farming families used to live on the mountain for the summer.
Did you know?

Five species of flowering plants growing on Ben Lawers have complete protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. • Farmers still have rights to graze their sheep on the National Nature Reserve.
