Supporting Biodiversity

The low intensity agriculture helps to retain and enhance locally and nationally important habitats, and provides a haven of ecological diversity. The NTS, with support from Scottish Natural Heritage, operates a Traditional Croft Management Scheme (TCMS) at Balmacara which encourages crofters to maintain rotational cropping and rearing of cattle in the traditional manner. The scheme offers direct financial support to crofters undertaking certain activities on their crofts with the aim of ensuring the protection of this increasingly rare cultural landscape and associated biodiversity. For further details of this scheme contact Iain at iturnbull@nts.org.uk or call +44 (0)1599 566325.

The NTS created the first new crofts in over 80 years in 2000 when it reorganised and extended the Balmacara Square township
