The Eisenhower Apartment
In November 1945 General Eisenhower was invited by the Kennedy family of Culzean to accept the tenancy of a specially created guest flat on the top floor of the castle. General Eisenhower and members of his family stayed here several times and also lent it to friends.
After his death, the National Trust for Scotland and Scottish Heritage USA, a charitable corporation that has provided valuable support to Culzean, opened the apartment to a wider public. It is now a unique venue for corporate and private hospitality and is also one of the Trust’s flagship holiday properties.
Superbly furnished and extremely comfortable, the Apartment has six double/twin bedrooms, which are available either as individual accommodation or for groups of up to twelve. Guests share an elegant drawing room and dining room, where the best of Scottish food is served.
The Cottages There are five holiday lets within Culzean Country Park and each has its own character and suits different needs.
The Brewhouse Flat: Beer and staple drink for all of the estate workers was brewed here until the 3rd Marquis of Ailsa extended the castle and turned the brewhouse area into one huge wine cellar. Nowadays the only things brewing in the brewhouse are tea and coffee, but please feel free to bring your own more potent refreshments.
The flat is now part of the castle’s West wing and has its own private entrance with nearby parking. Sleeping four in comfort, in two twin rooms, with the sitting room window looking out over Arran, it is somewhere to sit back and relax.
The Royal Artillery Cottage Originally utilised as servant’s quarters the Royal Artillery Cottage was occupied exclusively, following World War II, by disabled ex-service personnel from the Erskine Memorial Hospital. The cottage has recently been refurbished and now provides excellent facilities for both disabled and able bodied alike.
Sleeping four in two twin rooms, the Royal Artillery Cottage is a joy to stay in. With a view over Arran from every room you can just sit back and enjoy the vista for hours.
North and South Segganwells In 1891 we know that 14 people lived in these two cottages. Nowadays each cottage sleeps four to six people. The cottages are situated right on the beach, overlooking Arran, with the stream from the gorge running past, so theirs is a location that will take your breath away if, of course, climbing down the 126 stairs to reach them has not already done so!
Hoolity Ha One of the gatehouses to the estate, it was linked by wire to the castle so the gateman could warn of the Marquis’ impending arrival. You will wonder how the gatekeeper, his wife and six children managed to live in this one small cottage. The cottage now only sleeps two on a bed that folds down from the wall.
