Docile women tending to the hearth? Think again! The brave women of the ’45 actively raised men to join the fight and they did not flinch from sharing their fate. Come to our first ever women’s event to find out about Colonel Anne who raised the Clan Mackintosh against her husband and clan chief’s wishes. Hear about the women’s anxiety as they are waiting for news from their loved ones and applaud their courage as they withstand the repercussions after the Battle of Culloden. For two days we will pay tribute to the strong women of the ’45 with costumed presentations, interactive storytelling, tours of the battlefield, talks and music. Activities for children will also be on offer at special times on both days. For a detailed schedule please check this page nearer to the date or call the centre. Men are welcome!

We are pleased to have author Maggie Craig speak as part of our Strong Women! A Tribute to Heroines event. In 1997, Maggie published the first book focussing solely on the women of the ’45. The stories that she recorded are inspiring and heartbreaking, and a must-read for anyone that truly wants to understand the ’45. In this talk, Maggie will speak about the challenges of researching the women whose role and history has been neglected for too long. Maggie will be available afterward to sign copies of her book.

    Creative Writing Workshop for Adults
    Culloden
    Sat 25 October 2008
Creative Writing Workshop for Adults Now is your chance to try your hand at writing a short story – and about Culloden, too! More>
Have you ever wanted to try your hand at writing a short story? Why not participate in our “Hidden Stories” Creative Writing Workshop about the artefacts we have found on Culloden Battlefield. Who might have been the man that carried that cross pendant, and how did he lose it? What about that German coin dated years after the battle – did someone bring it to pay his respects to the dead? This workshop is aimed at all writing novices aged 18 and over. During the workshop we will: -look at the artefacts found on the battlefield -explore anything that can help us better understand these artefacts -choose an artefact to focus on -discuss what makes a good story -draw up our own storyboard -look at how to build up characters in a story -share and discuss our initial ideas for a story At the end of the workshop we hope you will feel confident to start writing your own 1500 word story to submit to our Creative Writing Competition (the deadline is the 21st of February, the day the Jacobite army captured the Old Fort George in Inverness in 1746). Greg Dawson Allen is a member of the Scottish Storytelling Centre (Edinburgh) and the Society of Storytellers (England). He is also the winner of the Stewarts of Blairgowrie Trophy 1992, 1993 and 2006. View Greg’s website at http://www.telliesperie.co.uk
