Souter Johnnie's Cottage
|
Souter Johnnie was a character in the Burns poem Tam o’ Shanter. Souter Johnnie’s real name was John Davidson. Souter is an old name for a shoemaker. Robert Burns's mother was born in Kirkoswald so there is a long connection with him; he also attended school here for a short time. Souter Johnnie lived in this cottage until he died in 1806. The cottage is furnished in the style of Souter Johnnie’s times. The cottage contains a lovely collection of tools similar to the ones the souter would have used. The souter’s family carried on living here until about 1920.
